THE STORY BEHIND

Under Deep Water is inspired by my original artwork of the same name.

In this work, Alter Ego Li is suspended beneath the surface of the water. The stillness appears almost complete, yet beneath the calm lies a quiet tension. The artwork explores the fragile space between uncertainty and transformation—a place where vulnerability and strength can exist at the same time.

To be in deep water is to enter a world where certainty disappears. Sound is muted, movement slows and everything is experienced differently. It is both a deeply personal reflection on moments when life feels overwhelming and a broader contemplation of the world around us, where humanity is increasingly confronted with the unknown.

The original artwork is composed from seven of my own photographs, brought together through digital composition, layering and visual storytelling. At its centre is Alter Ego Li—a symbolic figure inspired by a photograph of my daughter, Li, but intentionally transformed into a universal character rather than a portrait.

For this scarf, selected details from the artwork have been carefully reinterpreted into a flowing silk pattern, allowing fragments of the story to become wearable art.
