An artist statement by Bettina Jagorstrand

My work explores memory, identity and human connection through layered visual narratives. Using photographs I have captured myself over many years, I create compositions where fragments of reality are transformed into imagined worlds — places where different moments, emotions and stories can exist together.

The camera is my way of observing the world. I collect details, encounters, textures and contrasts from everyday life — the small fragments that reveal something larger about being human. Like a child collecting stones in a jar, I gather visual memories and transform them into new contexts where the familiar meets the unexpected.

My background in graphic design, advertising and interior design has shaped my approach to composition. Balance, colour, rhythm and space are essential elements in my creative process. Each work is carefully constructed, yet leaves room for interpretation — inviting the viewer to bring their own experiences and emotions into the story.

At the heart of my practice is a belief in the importance of empathy, equality and the right of every individual to be seen and heard. Through my work, I explore themes of human dignity, freedom and the fragile balance between vulnerability and hope. I am drawn to stories about those whose voices risk being overlooked — and I believe art has the ability to create understanding, challenge perspectives and build connections between people.

My art exists somewhere between reality and imagination. It carries the precision of visual communication, but lives in the freedom of artistic expression, where the story is never completely defined.
