In this work, Alter Ego Li stands surrounded by gold and shimmering objects. Everything around her glows, attracts and demands attention.
Throughout history, gold has symbolised value, power and desire. But within this space, another question emerges: what is true value?
The work moves between the external and the internal — between what we display and what we hold within. The things that shine around us can represent seductive promises of success, status and material wealth. Yet, at the centre of it all, Li becomes a reminder of something deeper: the importance of holding on to your own gold.
Stay Golden is not about shining for the world to see. It is about remaining true to what already exists within us. The greatest treasures are not always the ones that are visible.
The artwork is composed of five photographs taken by the artist, layered together to create a dialogue between photography and symbolism.
Alter Ego Li is the central figure throughout this series. She originates from a photograph of the artist's daughter, Li, but has been intentionally transformed through prompting and digital image-making into a symbolic character rather than a portrait.
By creating an alter ego, distance emerges between the person in the original photograph and the figure that appears within the artwork. Li is no longer one individual; she becomes a universal presence, capable of carrying different stories, emotions and interpretations for every viewer.
