In this work, Alter Ego Li wears a chain around her neck. Her face is concealed, almost like a mask or a form of armour. Some viewers may interpret the image through other cultural symbols, but here the focus is not on religion — it is on silence. On how individuals and societies can sometimes silence voices. But also on how we ourselves may carry chains we do not always recognise.

The work explores the tension between censorship and self-restraint, between being silenced and choosing to hold back one’s own voice. The chain can represent a lock, but it can also become a key.

Because even when barriers exist within ourselves or in the world around us, freedom of expression is not a closed door. It is a space that can always be opened.

The artwork is composed of eight photographs taken by the artist. Two of the objects have been prompted onto the photographs, creating a deliberate distance from traditional documentary photography.

Alter Ego Li is the central figure throughout this series. She originates from a photograph of the artist's daughter, Li, but has been intentionally transformed through prompting and digital image-making into a symbolic character rather than a portrait.

By creating an alter ego, distance emerges between the person in the original photograph and the figure that appears within the artwork. Li is no longer one individual; she becomes a universal presence, capable of carrying different stories, emotions and interpretations for every viewer.
