In this work, Alter Ego Li is suspended beneath the surface of the water. The stillness is almost complete, yet the atmosphere is not necessarily one of calm. Instead, the work explores the fragile space between uncertainty and transformation.
To be in deep water is to find yourself in a place where certainty disappears and you are forced to navigate the unknown. Beneath the surface, sound is muted, movement slows and the world is experienced differently. It is a place where vulnerability and clarity can exist at the same time.
The work moves between the personal and the universal. Being in deep water may describe an inner emotional state—the feeling of losing control—but it can also reflect a world where humanity is approaching a point at which we no longer fully understand the consequences of our actions, as the balance of nature continues to shift around us.
The artwork is composed from seven original photographs captured by the artist. Through layering, digital composition and visual storytelling, photography and symbolism merge into a dreamlike reality.
Alter Ego Li is the central figure throughout this series. She originates from a photograph of the artist's daughter, Li, but has been intentionally transformed through prompting and digital image-making into a symbolic character rather than a portrait.
By creating an alter ego, distance emerges between the person in the original photograph and the figure that appears within the artwork. Li is no longer one individual; she becomes a universal presence, capable of carrying different stories, emotions and interpretations for every viewer.
