Before I go | The Poem

Before I Go is a story about the strength it takes to fight for others without losing yourself in the process.
I created this artwork while listening to the composer Sebastian Plano’s piece Prelude to a Soul. The music became the emotional landscape in which this story was born. You can find his music at Apple music or Spotify.
I wanted to give the boy not only a visual form, but also a story. It may not be the story you feel or hear when you look upon this artwork — but it is the story I carry, and the one I wish to share.
Once upon a time, there was a boy
Not a prince.
Nor a king.
He had never sat upon a throne,
except the throne of thorns.
His companion here on Earth
was a noble steed.
As the boy grew older,
he became the protector of the lost.
He sent them, one by one, into the fields of Dandelions,
where they fought the war of becoming —
hoping to belong at last.
Yet he himself never truly knew
that sweet victory.
For every soul he saved
left another waiting.
And his motto forever was:
“One more before I go.”
One more lonely soul.
One more child, trying to find that place called home.
And so it came to pass
that he finally died hundreds of souls ago.
Not by swords.
Nor by spears.
But gently,
into the hands of time.
He had earned the right to rest.
Still today,
when the seeds of hope drift across the meadowlands,
some say they have seen his horse grazing quietly among the wildflowers.
And some even claim
to have seen the little boy riding upon its bare back —
as if they had become one with the wind itself.
Forever carried
through the fields of Dandelions.
